Easily Troubleshoot & Resolve 'Outlook E-mail Client' Error Code 0X800CCC0E!

The problem:

Are you sick and tired of not being able to fix your recent or prolonged issue with Windows Mail or Outlook Express/Professional regarding a error when you try to connect? 0x800CCC0 is probably the most common error that users are faced with when email fails using a E-mail client like Outlook Express or similar. The exact error I am talking about looks as followed:

SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

It's possible you may also see another error that resembles this one below:

You may have never touched your account settings inside your
mail client and you just started receiving this. It's also possible you are
receiving this message after performing a Windows Re-Install or Adding new
account settings and cannot figure out what your missing. I can tell you
something right now that might help. It is not the fault of the mail server that
resides on your ISP or Web-Host or where ever you may connect to your e-mail

You may be here because you have already found out that contacting
Technical Support or the IT department will not get you too far. This is because
you are not making a proper connection to the mail server. This can be because
of many reasons. In this tutorial, I will list step by step instructions on how
you might be able to fix this. Sometimes the settings or errors that caused
0X800CCC0E are so simple, you may feel stupid after fixing them. No worries,
everyone has their strong points in life and computer information doesn't have
to be everyone's thing right?

Below are instructions you should follow in order to resolve this kind of e-mail connection issue (0X800CCC0).

*NOTE* There are so many different versions and variations of Outlook, we will have to assume you will have general knowledge of where the settings are located inside your mail client.   • Do the most obvious first. Make sure you are using the correct Incoming, Outgoing, Username, and Password account settings. This can be confirmed by consulting your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the server Administrator, Technical Support Technician of your hosting services. Make sure to pay great attention to details. For example, on my account the username must be my entire email address. Like: If I use just 'garbage', I cannot gain access to my email using Outlook my e-mail client of choice. You can confirm your username and password easily by logging into your email account using a web browser and not your e-mail client. For instance, Comcast allows it's subscribers to Login to their email via, and I can do the same on my account using 'Webmail' which comes with my hosting services that I pay for. I would like to explain that using IMAP or POP3 does not matter! If your mail server supports IMAP (You can ask if it does!) the only difference is the email you download is not deleted from the server. This means when you download your emails into Outlook, you can actually go to another location like the work office and your e-mails can be downloaded again! They will keep doing this until they are deleted in the email client and re-synced with the mail server. If you want more information on the differences between the two, please use our website's Search Feature on the top left corner for IMAP or POP3.   • Now check your Internet Connection and make sure the computer you are attempting to connect through your email client, has an active connection to the Internet. Whether it be a representative at your ISP that is very knowledgeable in email problems, or the Technician from the hosting services you may be using. You will want to ask them what the secondary outgoing mail port is for your mail server. It will usually be port 26 or port 587. The representative at your ISP may not know about standard 'port 25' being blocked by them on purpose. I wouldn't expect them to know anyways, but you should be able to find out the secondary port number that you need. Now go ahead and enter in your new secondary outgoing port number only in your Outlook Account Settings Menu. It's not necessary to change any of the other ports you might see in your Account's Settings, so leave the rest of them alone for right now. During your troubleshooting process, you can leave the secondary port on until everything is working. Example: Even though you made changes to use Port 26 instead, don't change it back to port 25 just yet because you're still having troubles. Once you have gained access to your email again, you can then try disabling the secondary port, and start using the standard port 25 again, if it works out for you. If you're still having a problem or receiving the 0x800CCC0E Outlook Error, please continue down the list as instructed.
  • Now you will want to make sure any kind of Anti-Virus software like AVG, Norton, and McCafe is disabled on the computer for testing purposes. You will also want to do the same thing for any kind of Firewall Software, or Email Spam or Email Scanning software that you might be running. These kinds of programs can play a great role in preventing you from connecting to your email account correctly sometimes. Keep programs like the ones listed above disabled until you have your email working. Then you can start turning things back on to find out which one is causing you the problem with your email connection. Often times, this kind of software will lock down Outlook from using a port or from being able to operate properly all together.   • If you made it this far, you might want to check your e-mail account's SMTP authentication settings. When I use email, I have to have this enabled on my own account in order to Send & Receive my email properly on Outlook. You should be able to find this setting pretty easily in account settings somewhere. In Outlook Express you can get to this setting by click on the [Tools] tab, and then choosing the [Accounts] category. This will open up all of the e-mail accounts you have saved in Outlook Express. Double click on the account in question, and you'll see a New Menu full of settings that will soon appear. Now click on the [Servers] tab. This is where you will see the menu text, Outgoing Mail Server with additional text along with a check box that says My server requires authentication just to the left of it. Go ahead and enable that box, but do not click on the Settings button unless the server Administrator or ISP has specifically told you to enter information in this menu after clicking the button. Normally, these settings are left default in the rectangular shaped button, ([Settings]). Now, go ahead and click on Send & Receive and try to send or receive your email. If you're still having a problem or receiving the 0x800CCC0E Outlook Error, please continue down the list as instructed.
  • Let's make sure your not using the SSL feature unless your know what your doing. In fact, I would recommend disabling it for testing purposes all together, but it's your choice ultimately if security is a large issue for you. There should be a SSL check box to enable or disable SSL somewhere your mail account settings. SSL allows email messages to be encrypted when e-mail messages are downloaded or sent through the Internet. This isn't a very important feature to have enabled when troubleshooting problems in my opinion. Once you have everything working, feel free to play around with it and enable it if you wish. I do know one thing for certain. At my host, if I have SSL enabled, then I must use the servers host name for my incoming and outgoing mail server addresses instead of the normal ones I would use. For instance, normally I use for both incoming and outgoing IMAP/POP3 servers addresses right? Say I enabled the SSL feature for one of my accounts in this example... I would now have to use for both incoming and outgoing server addresses in order to connect to my mail server using the SSL feature. I'm not sure if this rule applies to most web host's or not, but I thought I would let you guys know in case you are using SSL and might be running into this kind of trouble. If you're still having a problem or receiving the 0x800CCC0E Outlook Error, please continue down the list as instructed.
  • I haven't verified this myself, but I have read if you are connected to the MSN Network. This will throw the 0x800CCC0E Outlook error as well and not allow you to make an additional SMTP connection to a server. I would recommend just shutting the MSN Network down if you have it on.   • Some of the older Windows 98/XP and Vista Service Packs and Updates have been known to prevent your e-mail connection from succeeding and making Outlook Error 0x800CCC0E pop up for you. SMTP Error Number 0X800CCC15

Thanks for the tip on shutting off antivirus software. My problem started after VISTA SP1 was installed. Restored system to pre-SP1. No success. I shut off Trend A/V software and problem went away. Reconfigured Trend for wireless system and problem did not recur.

I was able to resolve the error with your help.
First, I was able to send after enabling Server requires authentication.
Then, I was able to receive after changing Outgoing Mail Port number to 26 (from default 25); now everything seems back to normal.

ok after reading all information
when my outlook express all of a sudden wouldnt send out my email
i went to out going mail server, checked the box of requires authentication, put in my email and pswd of my ISP account..and NOW is working
was strange, all of a sudden my email wouldnt send out any email..and i hadnt touched the settings for the account since it was set up THREE years ago!!

I highly recommend STAY AWAY from that reguser thing they advertise to get rid of this error, it's a sales pitch and does NOT work!
